"We Don't Want Clean City"

John Lennon's Wall

In spite of their efforts to keep the wall free of graffiti, the wall was repeatedly repainted by dissidents, and became an important symbol of resistance to Communist rule. However, the graffiti on the John Lennon wall, like most of the other graffiti in the city, has lost much of its high-minded political content.

Today the wall is used mostly by young tourists drawn by the city's famously inexpensive nightlife, noting their passing of the historic site by scrawling their name and a date, or defacing the clay bust of Lennon in new and inventive ways.
